COVID-19: What do we know about the latest mutant Omicron?

The latest and most serious variant strain of COVID-19 has spread in South Africa, triggering 

global concern.The British authorities have designated it as a mutation that is being investigated. 

Many governments quickly adopted restrictions on travel and other epidemic prevention measures. 

Its name is b.1.1.529. The World HealthOrganization (who) has given it a Greek code name, 

Omicron, and announced that this new coronavirus variant is "worthy of concern". At present, most 

of the confirmed cases are concentrated in a province of South Africa.

Who experts met with South African officials on Friday (26 November) to assess the changing 

situation in the country. Some experts say the latest variant is so far one of the most worrisome 

aspects of the "worst mutant strain" is that it seems to be very different from the original COVID-19, 

which means that the effects of vaccines and drugs developed against known viruses and mutants 

are likely to be affected. But it is too early to make such a judgment.

The most worrying thing is that this virus is now completely different from the original 

virus in Wuhan, China.This may mean that vaccines designed based on the original strain 

may be less effective. But this problem needs further tracking research and more data.
