Winter solstice, also known as "winter festival" and "Hedong", is one of the 24 solar

terms in China and one of the eight celestial phenomena. It is opposite to the summer

solstice. The winter solstice starts when the sun reaches 270 ° of the Yellow meridian

and is around December 22 of the Gregorian calendar every year. It is said that the

winter solstice is the new year's day in the Zhou Dynasty in the history of the calendar,

which used to be a very lively day.

On the winter solstice, the position where the sun shines directly on the ground reaches

the southernmost end of the year, almost directly on the Tropic of cancer (23 ° 26's s

latitude). On this day, the northern hemisphere gets the least sunlight, 50% less than the

southern hemisphere. The days in the northern hemisphere reach the shortest, and the

More commonly, there is a custom of eating dumplings during the winter solstice in nor

thern China. As the saying goes, "when the winter solstice comes, eat dumplings." In the

south, there are exceptions. For example, in Tengzhou, Shandong Province, the winter

solstice custom is called counting nine. The custom of drinking mutton soup on the day

of counting nine is popular, which means to drive away the cold.
